    Default Such a waste

While I was in Walgreens today, a clerk was pulling outdated items off the shelves. She had a cartload of things. Eggs with "last sell by date of May 20th)..one day. Sierra Mist 12oz soda. Large Godiva and Wonka chocolate bars. Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies. (These had about a week left, but she said their policy was to pull 10 days ahead of the date.) Oscar Meyer already cooked bacon. Now maybe with the exception of the bacon and eggs, I didn't understand why they couldn't sell them to me at a reduced price...I did ask. And does Chocolate or pop ever go bad??? I even asked where the dumpster was and she told me everything is crushed. Ah well....rules and regulations...

Good idea. I know Krogers sends bread to the local thrift store, but I've seen them throw away meat ends from the deli dept because "they arn't standard size for slicing anymore." They wouldn't sell those to me either. I don't get it.

i've asked similar before, to donate to the food bank or churches, they won't accept expired stuff either and the nearly expired stuff i dunno about but walgreens is not allowed to even do that. The policy says that they must remove the bar codes to send back to the companies and then they toss the items into there garbage crusher disposal thingy and the "waste weight" picked up every week needs to match within so many pounds of the actual products they had to "throw out" or they won't get money for them. it's CRAZY really but it's the same way everywhere... it really is disgusting sometimes how much food we throw away and ppl are starving out there...its why eating at a buffet makes me nausiated... all that food people slop on a plate and don't eat and it just gets tossed... oh well

I HATE buffets too! This is gonna sound terrible, but I am from the south and it just reminds me of hogs at the trough.

That's too funny. My Mother in law calls a local buffet restaurant "the trough".

Wow, I will never think or look at a buffet the same. LOL I always thought there was something obscene about buffets and always thought they were a bit nasty (sanitary concerns), but now the Hogs at the Trough thought intensifies my beliefs. Unfortunately, my tubby father loves the "all you can eat" concept, and he has a driving desire to "eat his moneys worth." Scary thought!

My friend owns a packaging company.. and he told me about expiration dates versus sell by dates.... most dates on packaging are a sell by date, not an "expiration" date. Bread kept in the fridge may never go bad... Milk at least a week and one half past the date never goes bad--if it is not potable, milk can become cheese in less than an one hour.

When I went to Europe the one thing I learned as that we in the U.S. are veeerrry waaasteful.....

A few days ago, all my stores did away with the leftover Easter candy. My Publix had a ton and I'd planned to get a little, then it was gone. I guess they are only allowed to sell holiday stuff for up to 3 weeks? Does anyone know for sure?
