Saved $100 without coupons!!!
How you ask, I made DD's pay for their own clothes, that's how. This is the first time they paid for their own stuff and they loved it, and so did I.

My niece and nephew's always wanted very expensive clothing. My sister finally told them I'll pay $x.xx for 1 pair of jeans, if it costs over that amount, you pay the difference. She did that for everything... shoes, shirts, whatever.... they learned very quickly that money doesn't grow on trees and it made them think whether the 'popular name brand' was worth paying the extra money. It saved my sister a ton of money too.

You're never too young to learn.
Our little DD's are 7,5 and 2. Recently we increased their chores and their allowances, so now they get $.50/year of age every week. Well they needed a few new things for summer so we stopped into WM just to look the shorts over. After a few minutes the cart had like $150 worth in clothing piled in it. I started to feel like my DH would have a coronary when he saw the receipt. Then a light went on, hey - they have their own money and GC's from grandma at home. So we asked the lady at CS to hold our stuff, ran home got their money and GC's and came back. The girls were thrilled to pay for their own stuff, and each one had to have her own transaction - of course. But it saved me $100. Yeah. And when we got home they called grandma to say thank you and told her all about the things they bought. They were so animated and cute, we even had a fashion show.
Then of course my DH, who greets me every morning with "Good morning, love you, don't spend any money", gets home sees the receipt and says "yikes, $34 at WM!!!". I just roll my eyes and say "Good evening, love you, don't start with me". One of these days I'm going to have turn the girls loose in the mall with his credit card - that ought to teach him!

It's never too early to teach practical concepts about money-it builds a strong foundation for financial responsibility as they get older.

What a great way to instill money values.
Wish my DH was like...in the sense of concerned about $$ not that count every dime kind of way.

Good for your sister!
With my teenage daughter, I've told her that if it's clothing she NEEDS (hers is worn out, no longer fits, etc.), then I will pay for it (at a reasonably priced store: Wal Mart, Target, Kohl's on clearance, etc.). If it's clothing she just WANTS (but has plenty and doesn't really NEED more, or just wants to go to the mall and shop), then she pays for it. We're both happy with that arrangement.
