MD Safeway vs. Giant

I've noticed that Safeway seems to have a bad reputation on this site. But I'm a little confused because in my area, Safeway doubles coupons up to 1.00 and gives crazy discounts in the mail and through your club card. Example: Last month through Easter, Safeway was giving out 10dollars off any $50 purchase through your card and they sent out that same coupon in a book that included free items like salsa, tortillas,sour cream etc. I was able to save 50-60 dollars through coupons by doing two consecutive transactions with these 10 dollar coupons ,my coupons and their specials.My local giant doesn't have half as nice deals and even their store brand is more expensive than Safeway. So my question is: for MD Shoppers, why is Giant better?

I shop at both, but I mostly shop at Giant because of the "Scan it" (hand held scanner device) it makes shopping so easy. You can shop and bag all at once.. Then you go to the self check out and scan the hand held device (and coupons of course) and you are out the door...

I don't think my safeway doubles 1.00 coupons... The one in my are only doubles up to .99 cent, like Giant.. So the conveyance of the "scan it" does it for me...
