One coupon per purchase question ?

So my plan at Rite-Aid today was only to buy the Clean & Clear face product they had it buy one get one 50%. So I pulled 2 coupons for $2 0ff. I went up to the cashier with 2 Clean & Clear bottles and the next thing he said after ringing it up one coupon per purchase and he can not take the other coupon. ???? OK cancel it I do not want it then and then leave.
I went out to the car so confused The coupon says " Limit one coupon per person. Coupons can not be combined with other offers.No more than 4 coupons(of any kind) for the same product in the same transaction.

Now if it is a limit one person why then does it go on and say" no more than 4 coupons for the same product"? I go to this RiteAid about 2x a week they are a block away , but I am always nice & when I visit I do not always coupon nor do I clear shelf's. This was on the coupon deal web for RiteAid too . Was he wrong or what happen? I am not a complainer so I just told him I did not want it if I could not use both coupons.

per purchase=per item. If it said per transaction then that would be one coupon for the 2. Sounds like cashier was wrong?

One coupon per person ? Still not sure how I could of fought him on this. I did run down another 2 miles to the next RiteAid & had no issues and got it ?

The wording on the coupon in contradicting itself. At least you were able to get the deal at the other RA.
