Angry I was cursed out by a customer

Hi there I'm ely and I work for rite aid, when coupon ladies come into my store i'm always very very nice to them. I have no problem with them using 100 coupons as long as the register will take them. This one lady comes into my store and is always rude to them employees. I dont' know her name, but I have always been very patient and nice to her and her 15+ transactions per visit so she can use her +ups. Then I heard that she was taking about me to my boss, saying that I was goofing off with other customers and not doing my job. She said when she sees me she will walk out of the store. The boss did not talk to me about this because he trusts me and knew I wouldn't do such a thing. Also we have cameras in the store that proved I had done nothing of the sort. Then the other day she came in and then came up to the register with her items. I started ringing her up and I made sure I did is slowly so she could follow and make sure I was doing nothing wrong. One of her coupons would not ring up. I told her if an internet coupon would not scan I could not type it in. I asked if she wanted to speak to a manger about it. She said no and started cussing me out, she called me a c**t and said I was s**t talking about her with another employee, then she said she had it all on camera and it was recorded. Even though, of course I had done no such thing. I was trying to help her and I would have broken the rules and typed in the coupon myself to make her happy (we have the power to do this in extreme situations) until she started cussing me out. This makes me very upset, I want to help people like her but this really got me down.

Im so sorry that happened to you. It seems that lady is always miserable and out to cause trouble wherever she is. That type of behavior is not and shouldn't be acceptable. Is there anyway to speak to your manager about this? Maybe the next time she comes into the store she is helped by another cashier or maybe the mgr. I work in retail as well, although a different type of setting (I'm in charge of the showroom and customer service at a DME company) I have to deal with being treated pooring by customers as even though I'm being extremely nice to them. I probably get 'told off' at least once a day by a customer in one way or another. sometimes there's no pleasing them no matter how hard you try. It's gotten so bad that I've said to the owners of the company I work for that I refuse to talk to a partucular customer again because they're being vicious and nasty and I don't deserve that treatment.

Ugh. She used the c**t word? That's pretty vulgar. I'm surprised someone so ignorant of the English language has the ability to comprehend the use of coupons to begin with. In addition, (sort of off topic) why is it that so many people these days can only speak unless the *F* word is used in every sentence? Even some of the women I work with speak this way. I don't get it.

Oh my. That is too bad. I am glad you were the bigger person and did not stoop to her level. Good for you.

I work in a management position in retail so I understand how you feel. I've been doing it for numerous years - you are never going to please everyone but you always try. The ruder a customer is the more polite I try to be and that is what you did so you handled the situation correctly. I've developed a thick skin over the years and don't take things personally. I know that is easy to say and hard to do but I have had to learn that lesson. I also know that 99% of customers are great, after all they are what pays my check. Just yesterday I had a lady yelling at me over pricing policies, cursing me loudly so that you could hear her throughout the store, but when she comes in again I'll treat her politely like the incident never happened. So take a deep breath and remind yourself that you did a great job in handling this person. It is always the rude people who seem to stick in a person's mind but remember that for every 1 rude person you deal with there are 99 others who are happy that you are the cashier. And you mentioned that you have your manager's support, so go into work the next day with a big smile on your face as you are obviously doing a great job.

while I agree with you... this is now considered child abuse! I was shocked to find that out... DH's step daughter was in the system for a while and she's the one who told us.

I really do not know what people are thinking. The cashier's hold all the cards. It is in your best interest to be nice to them. Sorry this happened to you.

That sounds like a pretty extreme case of verbal abuse. At what point will they ban her from the store or at the very least warn her? I know as a cashier you have to put up with people being rude, but there should be a limit to what you are expected to take. Management should protect you too.
