I know that there are some businesses and corporations that DO offer military discounts to veterans year round as well. Rack Room shoes is one... found out about them by accident once, when I was using my CC to make a purchase (I have "See ID" on the back of mine) and the first picture ID I grabbed was my retired ID... and they told me "Oh, you get a discount!!" All these years buying shoes there (even when I was on active duty!), and I never knew. Lowes offers it as well. So does my DD's favorite store (which I barely tolerate) Hot Topic. Walgreens in my area (my understanding is that this is a YMMV type deal) offers military discount on Tuesdays of 15%, and 20% if it's a Walgreens branded item (which is why I do my Walgreens runs on Tuesdays).

i wonder if i would need a retired id card. a lot of people assume that if you were in the military, you must have retired. who knows why!

It is my personal experience (because I actually retired and bro did not) that to get a military discount you would need to have either an active duty, reserve, retired or dependent's ID card. Bro served 5 years, and can't get the discount because he doesn't hold any of those cards. I get the discounts all the time with my retired card, and his FIL (who retired as well) does, as does his MIL (who has a dependent's card). My cousin who is an Army reservist gets the discounts too... because he has the card.

It might be a good idea to remind some of our older veterans who may not have internet access about the free meal on Veteran's Day. More businesses need to honor veterans for their service to our country.

This is so true... good point about older folks who may not get online.

They shouldn't be asking to see id. According to Golden Corral's website, they don't require proof of service for the free meal.

Did anyone go? How was the service? Were they extra busy?

Applebee's was wall to wall people yesterday when I went... loads of veterans, both in and out of uniform. When I went to Applebee's last year, it was like I was the only vet in the place. They publicized it much more this year, and this year all locations were participating as well (not all were last year).

Service was great, food was good... and I, for one, most appreciated it!!!
