Default What are you making for Thanksgiving?

My husband and I have decided to stay home and do a just the two of us (and football) Thanksgiving. He wanted me to just make the boneless turkey breast I got a couple weeks back. But I said I wanted to go all out...if for no other reasons for the leftovers!!
I do the turkey (of course) and my mom's sausage abd bread stuffing.
Last year for the first time I made cranberries from scratch (the store had the fresh cranberries BOGO).
I do mashed potatoes..and since I do not really like sweet potatoes, I will buy a single one and bake it for Rick.
A farm market near my work sells half pies..some sugar free. So I will probably do a half pumpkin and a half apple.
I already have some of the things I will need...dry gravy mix and broth for the stuffing. I will get bread from the outlet store. Our Tops usually does the thing where if you buy so much in groceries, you can get a turkey for cheap or free.

It will probably be just DH, 3 DD's, and myself. Sis already told me they were going to her SIL's, and my IL's will probably stay in NY with DH's Gram. Maybe my Dad and Bro's will stop by between their work schedules, but I have no plans to go anywhere as the baby will only be a week or so old by then...if I have her by then...and am not spending Thanksgiving in the hospital, lol. I plan on making the turkey DH got free from work at a raffle a few months back, and my fav sides, mashed potatoes from scratch...stuffing, corn, gotta have gravy...leftovers I think, besides family time, are the next best thing about Thanksgiving
    ISO:

Baby any (diaper, food, snacks, etc.)
    Similac formula (checks/q's)

    Heinz ketchup
    Chicken stock
    Honey
    Condensed/Evaporated milk
    Starkist Tuna
    Maxwell House coffee
liquid coffee creamers (Bailey's, Int'l delight, etc)
    Variety Sack (Frito-Lay etc.)

List is still under "construction" but I wanted to at least get it going

My Vegan mom will be with us for the holidays this year so I am going ALL OUT!

The meat eater side of the menu is as follows:
The plan is a HEN turkey (smaller and more tender meat IMO)
Stuffing will be moms recipe from before she went meatless: bread, celery, onion, broth made from the neck and giblets and poultry seasoning- VERY yummy!
    Homemade cranberry sauce
    Homemade gravy
    sourcream mashed potatoes
    sweetpotato casserole
    green bean casserole
    homemmade parker house rolls
    various pickles and olives

The Vegan side of the menu will be as follows:

Marianated Portabello mushrooms stuffed with a vegan stuffing based on the traditional one above
Vegan mashed potatoes using veggie broth to make them moist
    mushroom gravy for the potatoes
the cranberry sauce above can be eaten by vegans so we will share that and the other condiments and bread
roasted asparagus with olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt and cracked pepper (VERY good)

    Dessert options:

    apple pie
    pumpkin pie
tomato soup surprise cake (surprisingly delish.. and cant taste the tomato soup at all!)

The past 3 years I have taken half my kitchen to College Station and cooked dinner there because DS26 has had to work. This year he is off so will be coming here. No one here cares for turkey so we splurge on a spiral cut ham from Honey Baked Hams. I will make a squash casserole, Bacon wrapped green bean bundles, cheesy scalloped potatoes, cornbread dressing and cranberry sauce. Since I am GF, I don't bake but the only sweet thing DS26 will eat is a cream cheese blueberry pie that I will throw together for him and I will save some of the filling for me. DH and DS21 will have to live with a store bought pie of their choice. It will be nice for all of us to be together this year.

It should, but another way to tell is the size of the bird. Young turkeys and hen turkeys tend to be in the 8-10lb range. I find a young turkey to be equally good =D

As I'm originally English Thanksgiving is still something of an alien holiday for me and as we only have our immediate family here it's just the two of us and the kids if they don;t decide to go spend it with someone else s family because they are American and do it much better than I do LOL I basically make a traditional English Christmas dinner which is roast turkey, roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy with a little fresh cranberry and bread sauces and of course Yorkshire puddings. Then I do this all over again at Christmas -(( Hubby doesn't like ham or mashed potatoes or green bean cassorole so I go our traditional route. Over the years we've had various people staying for Thanksgiving and they have always enjoyed the English version -))
