I invented a dessert this evening to use up some expired items from the stockpile. Wasn't sure how it would be, but it turned out great. Hubby would have finished them off if I'd let him.
Used:
tube of crescent roll dough -- had passed its date back in the spring, so I tossed it in the freezer-- returned home from 5 months in Mexico in December to find it still there -- thawed in the fridge and the dough was still perfectly fine
dried fruit -- I had some craisins, dried cranberries, and dried mixed berries, all purchased on clearance at Kroger
frosted walnuts -- got for free on clearance a few months ago at Meijer
a bit of vanilla, some ginger powder, some cinnamon, a couple spoonfuls of brown sugar, and a little water
I pureed the fruit and nuts in the food processor, adding in the vanilla, ginger powder, cinnamon, and water to make it into a flavorful paste. Then I unrolled the crescent dough onto a cutting board and spread a layer of the paste over it. I rolled it up like cinnamon rolls and sliced into what basically looked like miniature cinnamon rolls, put them in a greased round pan, and baked at 350 for about 23 minutes. Yum. The brown sugar and spices helped balance out the sourness of the dried fruit, and the crescent dough was just flaky enough to give a really nice texture.
