Anyone have a good recipe for sourdough bread? Do you make your own starter, or buy your starter? I have looked in a few grocery stores but have not seen starter for sale. If you buy yours, where do you get it from? I have a bread machine, so would make the bread in it - does regular sourdough recipe require any special care in a bread machine, or do I just dump in the ingredients and press "start"?
Thanks. |

I haven't made sourdough bread for ages but after reading some of this post and seeing her bread I do believe I'll be testing it out.... I didn't realize you could keep the starter in the refrig until ready to use....I remember the days of TLC for the starter

You really don't need to buy a starter... wild yeast floats around in the air. This fellow tells you exactly how to do it. Once you have your starter... just keep it as a mother dough...and keep adding flour etc. I saw where a San Francisco bakery has a mother dough that is well over 100 years old.
![]() Here's the link Make Your Own Sourdough Starter I think I like this lady's explanation better. (she includes extra recipes too) http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/buehler97.html

Thanks for the info. I will check it out. The San Francisco bakery bread is what started this whole thing. We were in the store and they had Boudin's sourdough bread at the market bakery. DH wanted to get some, since he had his first taste of it on a trip to SF last year. Of course, I would not buy it until I did some research to see what it would take for me to make my own sourdough bread. I'll give some of these website recipes a try.

ah San Francisco.........my understanding is that the sourdough has a totally different flavor there than the rest of the country....has to do with the yeast floating? I don't know. Anyways that's what I heard at a health food store many years ago...perhaps its changed? Or maybe you can buy SF starter?
