Default jello poke cake please help!

I made a trial jello poke cake today for the 4th of July holiday. I've seen them before with red and blue jello...they look nice and festive. But my blue and red jello muddled together and made purple of course. So, what is the trick to having nice separation of your colors? I suppose poke half of the holes and pour one color, let it set for an hour or so in the fridge, and then do the other holes and the remaining color and let set for another hour or two? Does anyone else make this?

You answered your own questions...let each color sit for a minimum of 2 hours before pouring a new color on. AND make sure the new color is pretty cool before pouring so it doesn't "melt" the existing color.

I would imagine that a very cool cake would be desirable too.

Thanks...well I never made one before, and figured there had to be a trick to it. I tried putting one on first and then the other with new holes...but I will try letting it set first. I did add 1/2 boiling water and 1/2 cold water to the jello. Love the pudding/cool whip frosting for it! So easy.

Mmmm. Can you share the pudding/cool whip frosting recipe? Never made a poke cake...but there's a first time for everything. Your frosting sounds better than just straight cool whip. Thanks!

Yes! it's super easy (and yummy!) and doesn't run. Take one cup of cold milk, and mix it with a small package instant vanilla jello pudding. Beat it about 1 min. till dissolved, but before it starts setting. Fold one thawed 8 ounce container cool whip into the pudding. Once folded, spread over your cake and keep it in the fridge when not serving. MMMMmmmm....yum!

Thanks for this! I'm making this with lemon cake and lemon jello. now your opinion: should I use lemon icing or lemon pudding mixed with cool whip? (i already have everything but the cool whip)

go for the lemon pudding mixed with cool whip! It will be light and sweet but won't overpower!

Definitely lemon cake and lemon pudding with cool whip. I have actually poked with lime jello instead of lemon jello and it is much tastier. HTH
