Does anyone know a good cube steak recipe (that doesn't involve mushrooms
)? Hubby's got a hankering for cube steak and I have never, ever bought it let alone cooked it LOL.

I do it two ways...I will marinate them and then fry with onions. Serve on a sub roll and melt some cheese...but pound them out good because they could be tough.
I like to make swiss steak with cube steaks. Normally I pound them out thin cut them into pieces and then dredge in flour. I brown them on both sides either in a little butter or olive oil then transfer to a plate to keep warm. Once all brown I add a couple of cans of stewed tomatoes, bring to boiling and scraping up all of the pieces at the bottom of the pan. Then transfer meat back into pot and simmer, simmer, simmer..Sometimes I add a packet of brown gravy mix and some cooking wine to the mix along with mushrooms (I love shrooms but you don't have to use them). Then I serve over egg noodles...it is yum but tastes better if you let simmer a while or even make one day and eat the next. |

Before I "got healthy" use to love cube steak.
Here's what I'd do: Dredge well in seasoned flour then brown well in hot oil, not a ton because you're just browning. Then leave steak in pan and add water or broth. Again this is an eyeball kind of thing because you're gonna be simmering a long time to get it really tender but also it will make its own gravy. After I add the water I slice up an onion all over top. Put a lid on it and start to simmering on low. Check every so often to see if you need to add liquid. As onions soften push them on down into the gravy.

I have cooked them like Kim but I also found a different recipe. Dredge the meat in flour, sprinkle with Lemon Pepper and brown. After they are just about done, add a can of tomato juice to the pan and simmer til done. I have also added onions to the pan as I could them.

I just made this the other night and it was awesome! I just cut up the cube steak into long strips, cooked it with strips of cut bell pepper, onion and garlic.
Then when it was done I drowned it in Brown gravy (I used one packet of mushroom gravy too, but you could just use brown gravy with onions or original) Then I served this over rice. Everyone in my family thought it was very good!

Here's one easy one:
Saute some onions in butter, brown your cube steaks in same pan (take onions out) ,salt and pepper to taste. Then put steaks on a baking pan and top with onions and blue cheese and broil until cheese is melted. Even my kids liked this, and aren't fans of bluecheese. Almost fancy enough for guests too! |

Wow, I haven't had cube steak since I was a kid. If I remember correctly, my mother used to just pan fry it - nothing fancy, probably with just cooking spray or a little oil and salt and pepper. Then she'd serve it with brown gravy (which I'm sure she made with Lipton Onion Soup Mix and whatever else goes into brown gravy) over white rice. I've never made that myself, but I remember eating it up when I was little.

I actually make it at least once a month.
I used to make it like my mother and grandmother simply coat in flour and fry. Now I ....first coat in well seasoned flour then dip in Buttermilk or dip in an egg wash , and then dredge in flour (seasoned well with pepper and garlic powder and a little salt) . That gives you the "double breaded" effect, and be sure to use self rising flour if you like the breading part. Then fry in a pan , not too much oil or all of your breading will wash off. You can make the gravy in the pan, which i am not that good at yet as i dont eat mine with gravy . You can also take many of the recipies the others have posted and simply leave out the onions. |
