I must have a dozen of the reusables. We got a bunch recently with the yogurt promo.

I am throwing a flag on that rumor. Even if Publix started charging for bags (which I can't imagine them doing) it sure wouldn't be 20 cents a piece. They probably buy 100 of them for 20 cents.

I called my husband (who is a Publix store manager) because I didn't believe Publix would do this...turns out that they HAVE to do it pursuant to state law (if the law gets passed).

The reusable bags are just not very sanitary. They can be a breeding area for germs when used for meats or fresh fruits and vegetables since there is often spillage. Melting ice cream sometimes leaks which could create an unsanitary bag. They are fine for boxed or canned foods, however.

I always use the reusable bags but do ask the baggers to put my meat in their plastic bags. I've never had issues with leakage into my reusables. Plus, most of the time I have a cooler with blue ices in my car because it's so hot and miserable here most of the time! Blech!

I work at Publix as a cashier. We will not be charging people for bags.

I ask for meats to be bagged in Plastic too, but I have thrown my bags into the laundry and washed them. Most of them hold up pretty well. The law thing might have something to do with how other countries got away from using the plastic bags which appear to be one of the worst things for the environment and the oceans from what I have heard.

We do use the reuseable bags most of the time. But just leave it to the lawmakers we elected here in Florida to pass another DUMB LAW. I also have to bag our own grocerys because of the size of the reuseable bags are so much larger the baggers always put so much in the bags. Making them so heavy you if you are an Old Man or Lady it is sometimes difficult.

Well, what if you get to the check out and don't have the reusable bags, and you don't want to pay extra for the bags? Then what will happen?

I wonder if anyone else here ever pulls my classic bonehead move with the reusuable bags...I'll walk into the store with the reusable hanging on my shoulder and then totally forget to give it to the cashier at the checkout. I walk out with an empty reusable and a plastic bag full of groceries.
