At the store where I work if anything on clearance scans for .01 we are to put it in the back room as they won't let anything sell for that low... .50 maybe but a penny no.... They reprogram most of those to a more acceptable clearance price. I have seen $25 toys scan at .01 and they no way would let even the employees buy them at that price.
I don't work at Dollar General so I don't know for sure but there policy may be similar. So you probably got lucky and she may have gotten in trouble and made up the story to keep herself out of trouble with her employer.
