Default Ban on Plastic Bags in Austin, Texas

Austin City Council to impose ban on plastic, paper bags | The Daily Texan

The local city council has imposed a new ban on plastic and paper shopping bags starting in March 2013. I am a strong advocate of using cloth "recyclable" shopping bags, but there are times I have left them at the house. In addition, my elderly parents with limited income, would never remember to bring their own shopping bags. So, I am somewhat conflicted with this ban.

Does anyone else have such a ban imposed in their area? I am interested in others thoughts and comments on this subject.

The city of Long Beach, CA has had this ban for about a year now. It just makes you remember to bring your own or make you pay for a reusable bag or paper bag in the store. Other cities have done it as well.

I think this is a good idea! I just would have so many issues remembering the reusable bags. I would hope if this happens around here the store would pass the saving on the bags down to the customers.

I live near Austin, I think it is stupid. Plus they are spending 2 million to educate the public about how to use a bag.

Almost seems unconstitutional and another form of government control to me. Yes I am a firm believer in reusing these bags, but not everyone can
do this. How does the out of town visitors know about this when they shop in the town? Is there a BIG BILLBOARD way ahead of thown warning them
to bring their own cloth bags? I doubt it. So to those of you there that reuse those plastic shopping bags, how will you get more when you run out?
Probably a dumb question , but just wonder.

    I think it's stupid.

I reuse plastic grocery bags for EVERYTHING. Wrap up dirty dipes (both sposie and cloth, no better way to keep a wet cloth dipe to take home than a plastic grocery bag.) I also use them for bathroom trash, office trash, we use them for lunch bags, clean up random besses, etc etc.
