Diverticular: can anyone help?
I seem to remember some people besides me have diverticular disease. Do you ever have any pain from it? I've had pain today, not bad pain, but I don't know if that's normal or if I need to do something. Thanks for any help!

What I need to know about Diverticular Disease
That tells a good bit about it. My mom was diagnosed with this and was in intense pain. The doctors told her to avoid foods like seeds/seseme seeds, nuts, corn, popcorn, ect. From what I understand they can lodge in these "pockets" causing pain. I'm not sure where the pockets are though. HOpe the site helps. Good Luck and I hope you get to feeling better.

To answer you Nerdy, mine has been ussually at the level of "this is uncomfortable ,but I can wait to go to my regular Doctor " level of pain.It has never been to the level you are asking about. If it were to ever be at the level of" I've got to go to the emergency room pain", I'd go immediately.( We currently have no insurance due to husband's being unemployed - but under that level of pain , I'd still go. ) My feeling is that that is our body's alarm system going off full volume and it is bot to be ignored.
I beg you to go to the ER if your pain is at that level.

It's not, or I would. I just needed to know if having *any* pain at *all* is a sign that you should go to the ER. My pain is about a 3, and it's an intermittent pain.
My cousin who is a nurse has this, and she told me last night that if I get infected and in danger of rupturing I will KNOW it. She said that pain is excruciating and constant, it happened to her. She also told me ruptures are very uncommon, so that made me feel better.
Does your doctor just give you antibiotics for that?

My Mother-in-Law has this (so do I) and she has been put in the hospital atleast twice that I can remember from the diver and yes, they put her on Antbio's. I myself have not had any issues, yet.
Have a great day -
MAcey

Did you get your diag. from having a scope done? Within the last 5 to 10 yrs? If not, you need one. Had one done myself, not fun, but the worst of it really was the prep. Was told I had it before the scope, but it confirmed that's what is and not something worse. Anyway my dr said things like seeds/sesame seeds, nuts, corn, popcorn, ect. are ok in moderation IF you follow a high fiber diet to purge these things. One thing that absolutely will cause me pain is BEEF. It is hard to digest for anyone but dr says even more so for older and diverticulosis patients as it gets stuck in those pockets and can cause infection. I know it's a struggle for some to get enough fiber without supplements but it has helped me. For me, very mild, crampy, intermittent pain is just something I live with. See a dr if its anything more than that, esp if it's with unusual stool as it could be diverticulitis (infection) or worse. Debilitating pain, go to the e.r.

I don't want to scare you but.....I did know someone once who had it. She had aweful pain that would put her on the floor writhing. The darned doctors kept telling her it was "ladies pain" or "mittle schmertz" and would give her birth control and send her home. Buy the time she finally got to a Dr. who knew the difference from his rear end and a hole in the ground, she had developed Crohn's Disease and had to have several inches of her lower intestine removed.
Apparently the pain was the Diverticula being severely inflamed, and when left untreated, it actually scarred her intestine, rendering it immobile.
I would call your doctor or his nurse, who will undoubtedly ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10. If he or she feels it is severe enough, a Drs appointment may be suggested.
Regardless, I hope you feel better soon.
