I am looking into making some extra money this season. Friends have told me that they use Ebay to sell some of their items they no longer use. I am interested in finding out about other sites where I can sell some of my daughter's nice dresses that she has outgrown. I keep hearing that there are many fees attached to Ebay and Craigslist would mean people I don't know coming to your house and that seems kind of dangerous in these days we live in. I would love to hear about other sites where you can sell your things. Any suggestions????
![]() Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I'm not sure about other websites. We've sold several things on craigslist without a problem. You can always meet them in a public setting, but there are a lot of no shows. Or wait until your husband gets home and don't let them in the house at all. We've sold on ebay too, but there are tons of fees, and if you forget to pay you end up paying interest or fines.

Do you have a Once Upon a Child near you? or another children's consignment shop? that would be an option. E-bay is not what it was back in the hay day. Fees, shipping, your profit is not as good as it once was, that's just my opinion though.

Not sure how to reply to different people but I will do it this way.
fredvelma - That is a good suggestion to wait until my hubby is home or to meet in a public place. Do you think clothes would go well on Craigslist since what most people tell me they have big ticket items? Kristinemomof3 - I have a consignment shop near me but I don't know if the store policy is good. It is a 60% (to the shop) and 40% (to the owner of the clothes) and after 90 days they donate it. You don't get it back. She said she had lots of clothes that would never get picked up, so she has this policy now. Another question: How do you price your items? I have some really nice dresses that my daughter had for various special occasions that I am not sure how to price. With the holidays I thought it would be a good time to try to sell them. Thanks for the input.

I've sold lots of things on Craigslist. I only let people come to my home when my husband is going to be home, but usually I just meet them at a public place or in the parking lot of the office to my apartments...that way they don't know which building I live in. And even if they meet me at my home I usually meet them outside so they don't know which unit I'm in unless it's a larger item.
As for pricing the items...maybe go on ebay or look on craigslist and see what similar items are priced at. You can always ask for a price you think is fair to you as the seller, but then say "OBO" (or best offer) that way if someone wants it but the price is too high for them they can offer you a lower price and you can decide if you'd take that. |

I always meet in public for Craigslist. Mostly because I live too far out of town for most people. My one funny story was I had loaded up all the items I was selling and carried them in the car with me in case someone called and I happened to be in town. Met one lady to sell a rug and she ended up buying everything in the car.
![]() Ebay might still have their promo of 5 free listings per month. I also have mine automatically drafted each month. (have a separate business checking account) Depending on condition and style of garment you can get between 10-100%. Sounds crazy. If the dress is in perfect condition and you paid $20 you could probably get it back. Read other ads to see going rates. If this is a one time thing I would go with Craigslist and post GOOD pictures and descriptions. Be willing to negotiate. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the input everyone. Julieduck I love the whole trunk load of goodies being sold.
MsA I am going to have to meet in a public place for sure. Thanks for sharing how you do it. I am going to try my hand at Craigslist and see what happens. If anyone has any other tips, please share. |

I sell my children's clothes at local consignment sales. Around here they have so many of these. Usually at the private schools do these to raise money. You pay a small fee to place your items, (less than $10) then you get 70% of the sales. I made $40 selling my son's old clothes that I paid around the same price for since I buy everything second hand. They also let sellers shop before the general public and you can get some great deals. Look online for sales in your area. Hope you can find one.
Bigger ticket items I have had success buying and selling on Craigslist, but I agree, always meet in a public place. Never give them your home address, even if hubby is home. |
