perhaps that is the situation in your state, but that most certainly is NOT the case here in texas. it is ridiculously easy to cheat the system, & MANY MANY people in El Paso do this. it's a shame & it makes me angry.

i know that i was super embarassed the whole time my family had to be on welfare. i hated going to the store with my mom, & tried to avoid it whenever possible. i thought it would get better when they changed from a paper system to a debit card system, but it was still embarassing, & people would still huff & puff behind us.

i do understand that many people legitimately need the assistance, but i tend to get frustrated when i see people who already can't handle their finances having more children, just to get more welfare money. then you see them buying 18-packs of beer

I agree. I was up visiting my aunt a few years ago, and it blew my mind to see this guy who had just paid for his groceries with food stamps load them up into a brand spanking new BMW SUV. Yes, there is the outside possibility that he borrowed the vehicle, or whatever... so I shouldn't judge... but it DOES make one raise an eyebrow or two.

Here in Michigan it is much harder now to get assistance. But, many of those who have already been on it, still know how to cheat it... When I had my hysterectomy, I was single with a single income (obviously). I needed 6 weeks off to recover and had no money coming in. I went for help, and even showed the lady my incision (privately) and was still denied. I only needed help for a short time and had a job to go back to. No food stamps, no cash assistance, nothing, nada.... meanwhile, this other professional welfare gal had driven up in a 'decked out cadillac', wearing bling, talking non-stop on her cell, was given everything... she was next to me in the interview area and I could hear everything. My caseworker couldn't believe that she couldn't help out... I just didn't fit the criteria

To the OP, I'm so sorry that idiot decided to share his opinions with you... but I would have done the same thing...

Default I understand

HI...
I live here in washington, and here, it is VERY easy to get state assistance, unless you are white and have no babies. There is one thing that annoys me about the system in WA is that you can be level headed, doing all the right things, (working, keeping your pants on ect) and still not qualify for any kind of financial aid or help.
But as soon as you poop out the first kid, they cant wait to give you everything you need so that you can just live on welfare for the rest of your life.
WIC is the greatest program i think the government has ever come out with. It helps moms and babies in need, and you can still feel good about going to use them. Those old people dont know what the cost of formula is.
I am glad to see that you stood up to that man, he has no right to question someone like that. I could understand if it was a bunch of Pop and stuff for a BBQ later, that ticks me off, but when you see people actually buying food for there families, (like real food, veggies, meat , fruit) you know they are in some kind of need.
It is still very easy in everystate that uses the Automated Debit card system, to cheat it. Even though you cannot Sell your food stamps, you can go buy a certain amount of food for someone else for cash.
Anyways... That is just my two cents.

Default Thanks Again...

Thanks again to everyone and Sharika you are absolutely right about the welfare, it seems like they want you to continue to have kids and stay on Welfare. The WIC is great and I'm glad to see other people on here can get it too. I told her to stand tall, she works and serves her country and just needed a little help. They have 3 small children, no more, as that is taken care of..lol...they are 4, 1 and 7 weeks old and daddy is staying home to take care of them until the oldest starts school and then he will return back to work and put the other two (2) back in daycare. It is so expensive, he would only be working for daycare, as it would be 500 dollars for 3....Thanks again to everyone......

Daycare has always been so expensive!!! DD was in the daycare on base when she was an infant, and I remember just about choking as I scribbled out the check every two weeks. Back in the day (1992) $75 a week was a ton of money for daycare.
