Tuesday , my son who has autism was out from school ( He had a rash of some kind but other than that he was fine ). Since he is my shopping buddy when he is home , I took him on my normal errands and then out to lunch at McDonalds.
We had just walked in and there were already a few people ahead of us. I had just gotten a hold of my son in our usual waiting in line stance( I have to hold my son firmly by the shoulders when we have to wait in line otherwise he's everywhere breaking in front of people , dancing around etc), We had not been in line long ,when a young man nearly at the front of the line motioned for me and my son to come in front of him. I thanked him briefly and wanted to thank him again for his kindenss again after we got our food but he was gone. There is no way I could ever convey to him just what his simple act of kindness meant to me . I'm sure he thought nothing of it but it was very meaningful to me. I just wanted to share this with you guys and ask what acts of kindenss have you recieved recently . |

That is such a precious story. I can't think of anything specific, but I would say someone distracting and talking to my son while he's having a tantrum has been a lifesaver.

I too have a son with Autism and can identify. Its wonderful to hear those kinds of stories. Too often people look at us when we go to the stores because its a task but you want your child to have some sense of normalcy and the only way to do that is venture out with them.
You just made my day!!

Aww, thats so sweet.
It's amazing how far a little kindness can go. Maybe letting someone pull out in front of you on the highway or letting the person with 5 items check out first instead of waiting after your full buggy load. Or, opening the door for an elderly/disabled person. So many little things can change how people act toward others.

That really was a kind thing which like you said, to him it meant nothing but to you it meant so much. with my dh overseas, my girls and i are alone alot and we have alot of neighbors who pretty much stick to themselves but there's one couple who we've become good friends with and any time we have a storm or a blackout(last week) they always call to check on us to make sure we're o.k. and to see if we need anything. That phone call means so much to me and it helps my dh to feel a little more at ease while he's away. I'm a huge fan of cooking and i'm always sending food over to them, just to show them that i appreciate them. It always make you feel good when you can do something for others that's really from your heart.

A copy of a letter I recently wrote to Wendy's:
I am writing to tell you about the wonderful customer service I received at your Buckeye Lake, Ohio store on August 17th, 2009. I was having lunch with my children after visiting my son’s new classroom before school started. I have a 13 year old autistic son who loves CDs, DVDs, etc. He is nonverbal. We went to your store and in the display for the kids meals were a couple of CDs. Jacob really wanted them. I asked the cashier (a blonde young lady) if they were available and she said they were not in yet. Jacob was a little agitated. Without looking at my son strange, she picked up the toys they did have so he could see and let him choose. That was nice, but it got even better. When we sat down to eat, I noticed the kids meal bag had an advertisement for another promotion, Audiobooks. I thought Jacob would love these and they would be good for learning. After we finished, I went up to the counter to ask if the audiobook promotion was coming or going. Another very nice cashier (a tall brunette young lady) said the promotion had just ended. I asked if they had any audiobooks left over that they would be able to sell. The cashier said she would check with the manager. That was nice, but it got even better. I went to my seat with some Frostys for the kids, when the manager (a another lovely brunette lady) came and gave my son 2 audiobook CDs for free. Not only was this a very kind gesture, but I was really delighted that no one stared or looked at my son oddly. He can act a little different, especially when under stress or anxiety, and your employees were very respectful of his disabilities. Giving my son two audiobooks that were probably going to be thrown away may seem like a small thing, but you really made his day. You have made a customer for life |
