Depends on the kind of ants. If they are the small sugar ants that come indoors, definitely Terro is the way to go. I had a HUGE ant problem on my lanai. Not sure the kind of ant, but not sugar ants. They were living under my spa, I think. Anyway, I was getting ready to call a professional, but decided to try an outdoor pest solution I got at WalMart. It is by Ortho, I think. Not a canned spray, but a large container with an attchable nozzle. It's used for roaches and palmetto bugs, too, which is a huge problem in Florida. I sprayed the trail for several days, and put down bait. It didn't kill them, but soon I saw big ants moving out (maybe Queens)? and haven't seen them back. Even though the spray said once every few weeks, I did it every day, and it solved the problem.

Default I bought ant baits this year.

When the ants showed up at our house this year I bought these little ant baits, they are off white and are oval shaped. I think they have something similar to the Terro in them, but we have small children and I didn't want to deal with poison control issue, so I tried these first. I got them at WM, a six pack for $4-5. So far so good, I've seen just a few ants since.

Last summer I had a bad problem with black ants coming in through the garage. I sprinkled Borax alongside cabinets and anywhere I thought they were tracking in. Each day I saw fewer and fewer until they were gone. Took about 2 weeks to eradicate them. I swept up the dead bodies and excess borax. Haven't had a problem with them this year. As someone mentioned, Borax ISN'T non-toxic, so if you have toddlers or pets, you will need to be very careful where you use it.
