Unhappy Had Hysterectomy two days ago

Sorry if this is TMI. I had a hysterectomy on Friday morning and got home yesterday afternoon. I'm feeling pretty rough today. I have terrible gas pains in my stomach and I havent had hardly any sleep in three days. The nurses were wonderful, but i'ts hard to get any rest in the hospital. I'm 35 and i've had heavy periods since I was 11. My blood count was 9.5 and doctors transfuse at 8 so I was tired all the time and would get light headed alot. I just want to start feeling better. I have 5 kids,my youngest is two and she keeps me on my toes so I dont have time to be tired like this. My boss thinks i'm going back to work in a week, but my doctor said in a month because I will get tired very easy. I'm just glad the hard part is over. Have any of you ladies had a hysterectomy and did it make your life better or worse? I did keep one of my ovaries so I wont go into menapause. Amy

Hi Amy.

I had mine at about the same age. It truly does take 6-8 weeks to recover so don't push yourself. Stay down and follow the Dr's orders. You'll be sore for a while... afterall this is major surgery. The gas pain you are feeling is the inert gas the pump into your abdominal cavity to distend your stomach. It takes a while to disburse so relax and watch some tv, read a book, or sort those coupons.

Once you heal... you are going to wonder why you waited so long!!

Anyway... I hope you feel better soon.

Sylvia

Hi Amy,
I was 38 when I had mine, two years ago this coming July - it was the best thing I could have done (cancer-related). Full removal and both ovaries, so Estradial for me. Yes, it has made my life so much better! While I still have bouts of sleepless nights, I will gladly accept this in exchange for all 25 years of extreme pain, frustration, testing, biopsies and worries that finally lead up to the hysterectomy. Each persons recovery time varies and after-affects will very, too. Take it easy ... do not lift ... ask for help ... any questions call your nurse.

Here is the site that I found before surgery - they have info, forum and a great place to ask those 'very' personal questions. Please visit at Hysterectomy Support Discussions, Before Hysterectomy, After Hysterectomy, Recovery - HysterSisters

Hi Amy,
Just like Sylvia said, take it easy & follow your doctors orders.
I had a partial hysterectomy at 30, left with one ovary also. Recovery takes time, don't push yur body to do things it isn't ready for yet, get plenty of rest (I know that can be hard with young kids, but try )Listen to your doctor ...
Even though you still have the one ovary left, your body may go through some hormonal adjustments, hopefully your doctor discussed this with you. From my experience.... I started getting mild hot flashes, and mild mood swings (but, these mood swings were nothing compared to the ones I had before the operation). After talking to my doc about this, he suggested trying supplements, black cohosh or soy products. I also took a product called Remifen(?) I found at Walgreens.
I do still get "monthly" mood swings, as odd as that seems, but they are mild, and rarely get hot flashes. It has been ten years, and have never once regretted having to get the procedure done. The operation/recovery are a small price to pay for no more periods, no more pain, no more mood swings..
I hope your recovery goes well, just take it easy
Betsy

I haven't had this but can relate to the tummy problems after major surgery. If you have a rocking chair sit in it and rock, rock, rock. For some reason it helps get rid of the air.

My only other advise would be to make sure your doctor is OK with any herbal type products because they can interfere with any medicines you may be taking as well.

I wish you well.

Blessings and Hugs, "Angel"

I hope you start feeling better soon. Don't try to push yourself back to work before you are ready. Take care.

I have also had surgery where they had to inflate my stomach..

try lieing on your side knees to the chest as far as comfortable. To where you can sleep that way. A pillow between the knees is best and most comfy..

Also for imediate relief try squating with head to knees if comfortable..

gasex meds also work great by desloving the gas! Drink lots of water !

feel better soon!
