Default Use a hand scanner and get discounts!!!!

This is a new one on me. I knew the new thing at Giant was the use of hand scanners to walk around the store and scan your items but I didn't know that if you scan your bonus card into the scanner that you get additional discounts on certain items, plus it takes inventory of items you've previously purchased and everytime you buy those items you get some kind of discount. This is also in addition to the savings from your giant bonus card. WOW. I'm gonna check this thing out tomorrow.

I didn't know there were additional discounts. How did you find out?

What is the purpose of the scanners? What are the benefits of using the scanners?

At some stores when you go in there is a area when you first walk in that you scan your bonus card & there are scanners on the wall - one will start blinking & that is the one you use. As you go through the store you scan your items & go ahead & bag them (I didn't really like that part). When you are done you can go to the self-checkout & scan your card - everything you scanned then goes into the system automatically - then scan your Q's & pay. The first time I did it the cashier was prompted to check my items - she said every once in a while it will prompt them to check even old customers. It isn't fun when you have kids along. The bagging part was weird since other customers are shopping & I felt like I was always in the way cause I was standing to the side or blocking the aisle to put stuff in the bag. Then your cart gets full & it is difficult to bag then. Maybe you can scan throughout the store then bag when you get up front??

I didn't have time to do this over the weekend. I will be doing the scanner this weekend though because, WOOOOO HOOOOO Giant is doubling up to $1. YEP $1. You have to have the $1 Qs from the paper and use one with your manufacturer $1 Qs and every $1 Q will be DOUBLED. Yippeee!!!!!!!!!

My understanding is that, as you scan items, it will offer you additional discounts on related items. Like if you buy a bag of tortilla chips, it will then offer you an electronic coupon for salsa. Supposedly there are big deals to be had--but they aren't doing it yet at my Giant.

My Giant doesn't have that service yet, BUT my Giant Eagle does. I haven't tried it because I was wondering how it worked if you use coupons. The next time I run in for just a few items I will try it.
