Unhappy Giant Eagle - Doubling Coupons

I posted the thread the other day about how I can get the Planter's peanut butter for free when the coupon says "do not double." Two people replied that sometimes it just goes through even though it says "don't double." I inquired at the store today and got more information. The computers are set to double the coupons up to $0.99, however when the coupon says "do not double," the cashier is to press a key and override the doubling. So for all those out there that are able to double coupons when you aren't supposed to be able to, you are lucky ducks! It seems like if you get a cashier that isn't paying attention, you will luck out. I, unfortunately, have not been so lucky. Just keep this info in your mind when planning a shopping trip and budgeting. Plan for not doubling and hope for the best!

The cashiers at my GE are all on the ball and they always hit the key that won't allow it to double. I don't think of it as a bad thing because IMO having cashiers that know what they are doing EVERY transaction is more important than getting a coupon to double that the manufacturer didn't want to double in the first place.

I'm curious-why do you think the manufacturer would care if the coupon was doubled? They aren't reimbursing the store for the "double", just the face value of the q (plus whatever the handling fee is, like .08 right?). I have always wondered about that. The stores are the ones paying for the "doubling", so why does the man. care? Anyone know?

My store they'll double them whether they say not to or whichever. Per what missmbb said , they say the store eats it so it doesnt matter. Either way if you have cashiers who are anal about it , just go through U scan or self check out. But remember when you're going through self check out at giant eagle it will only double 2 like coupons anymore after that it calls for someone over. So you may have to break your order down. Though ive never had problems with the ladies at my GE , lovely people.

    Default Good Idea

That's a good idea about going through the self check out. I will have to find a Giant Eagle that has one. I live in a small town, and all the stores around me are small and only have 2 lanes open that are staffed with cashiers. The self-checkouts aren't even there! May have to venture to the big ole' city to find a store that has one. Maybe that will solve my double coupon problem. I will keep in mind about the 2 coupon limit too. Thanks!

I used my Planters peanut butter q's today at Giant Eagle with no problems. They were even training a new cashier in the line I used and he noticed that the coupon said not to double it and asked the trainer what to do. She told him to scan it like normal. The register will either double it or take off a lesser amount (if doubling it would lead to overage) and that's that. I'm glad because that meant free peanut butter for me.

You are lucky you found the peanut butter. I had to get a raincheck.

Yes, there are 3 Giant Eagles within about 4 or 5 miles of me and another one less than 10 miles away. Only 2 of the 4 had any and they didn't have a lot. I was out driving for work today and was driving by another one that I don't normally go to so I decided to stop in. They had a TON of them. I could've probably gotten 20 jars easily but I didn't have that many q's with me. Oh well, I'm happy for what I got.
