I sent my sons name he is sitting here in a wheel chair. He broke his leg 3 weeks ago and required surgery. He had 5 screws and a plate placed in his right leg so this made him smile today.

You should be able to find astronomy-related events in your area, even more likely if you live near a university or planetarium. There are many amateur astronomy organizations out there that may be hosting outreach activities, too.

I think it's because the Jet Propulsion Lab (which includes the Mars Science Lab) is located at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Well, they'er both in that area but are not the same. JPL is not generally open to the public- only one weekend/year (if you're ever in the area that weekend it's definitely worth the time) and by invite...yes, that is where the mars rover is controlled from, etc. Cal Tech is a school in Pasadena- not directly related to JPL (though I'm sure there may be internships, etc...)
