    Default Letter carrier food drive

It's that time again. The National Association of Letter Carriers' food drive is May 12. Clean out those free boxes of pasta and hang them on your mail box. Your mail carrier will pick it up. All food collected goes to a food bank in YOUR area. We ask that you not donate glass jars of food, expired food, or damaged packages of food. You should be getting a post card in the mail next week reminding you about the drive. Thanks in advance!

My Post Office has a large rolling canvas bin put out every year so you can donate there.
Last year, my mail carrier said no one else had donated when she picked up my 2 bags and when I went to the Post Office later on, the bin was empty.

Phil, we pick up quite a bit in our zip code, but it was less than the previous year. The whole city picked up about 200,000 lbs last year. The economy is to blame I guess. The trailor park that I deliver has central boxes. Last year residents left food there, and asked if I had picked it up. I hadn't, so obviously someone in the park had. This year I'm organizing drop off in the park office. Some people just put their donation right in their box instead of hanging it from the box. I have around 500 stops on my route. If everyone on my route would just put one item in their box, that would be a huge amount. but, it always seems to be just a few people that donate a lot of items. Anyway it all adds up.

I've been talking to my little girls about this and they're soooo excited about it. We always do it for all the holidays too. They feel so good knowing that they're helping others that may not be as fortunate. I'm so grateful for all of the blessings we have and I love to fill the bags!!!! I see quite a few homes up and down my street that leave bags at their mailboxes, I think it's great!

I was at my local food pantry donating yesterday and I have to say I have NEVER seen the shelves so empty or the ladies that run it so grateful for the donation I made. They reminded me that the mail carriers drive was on Saturday and they were hopeful that it would stock the shelves again. So if your thinking maybe you should participate it would be wonderful if you could because I can tell you that they really need it this year....

My mail carrier left the plastic bag form publix for the food drive today in my mailbox, I'm going to try too catch him tomorrow and ask for a few more, if not I'll just use any other bags,,,I'm sure they'll be happy to get food no matter what kind of sack it comes in!

Got a bag in the mail today and already filled it. Should be able to put together a couple more over the next few days. Are there things they need more than others? Can they use petfood? So far I have canned veggies, beans, chicken, tuna, and soup.
