My favorite donation sites in GA
M.U.S.T. Ministries Cobb/Cherokee GA - I always donate to the M.U.S.T. ministry. They always provide a receipt for tax deductions.
MUST NEVER sells the items donated - they give everything to other members of our own communities. There are 3 locations I know of and not only do they distribute donated items, they also provide counseling services, job referrals, job seeking services (resume prep, dress for success). I have actually gone to drop food, personal hygiene, clothing, furniture, toys, books, etc. and they would not let me leave without taking some bread or buns!!
The Publix across the street from the one I donate to apparently gives so much bread they would rather someone take it that can use it than throw it away and that's a good thing. My household of 6 can eat a lot of bread!! Plus add all the neighborhood kids that seem to be here all the time - but I don't mind because I feel that if the kids have a place to go and aren't running the streets, just maybe they won't get into trouble.
Also, the Cobb County & Smyrna libraries provide receipts for books, magazines, movies, music (any media type), newspapers, etc.
None of my extended family members or friends and their families ever leave my house without what I call a "care package". It may be a box of cereal or grits or oats, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper, air fresheners, whatever, but I really enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces when I give them things that cost me absolutely nothing or almost nothing.
To me it means that I'm the one who has been truly blessed because I can help them in ways that they don't feel like their asking for hand-outs. And lets face it, who doesn't need the kinds of things I get free every single week??
Although school is almost out for the summer, don't forget the alternative high school programs. Georgia has "Communities In Schools" and "Performance Learning Centers" for high school students that want to graduate from high school but don't quite fit into the typical high school way of life. These programs allow the students to work at their own pace through computer based modules but they also have very strict attendance policies. All students must provide their own transportation (personal or public) and most live on their own with minimal or no parental involvement. A lot of these students are striving to get by and are most appreciative of anything, no matter how small, that will help them. Every Wednesday is "Dress for Success" so slacks or skirts, dress shirts/shoes, dresses, even belts or other accessories as well as paper, pens, pencils, binders, folders are always in high demand.
No matter where you live, I'm sure there are plenty of worthy organizations to donate your "bounty". Don't forget the Salvation Army or Goodwill either.
If anything, I hope this post will further the efforts of my fellow Georgia couponers to support organizations that are dear to my heart.
