Default National Letter Carriers' Food Drive

For those of you, (us) that have extra food to donate, I would like to suggest the letter carriers food drive. It happens once a year, always the Saturday before Mother's Day. It's on May 9th this year. Just leave your non perishable food items at your mail box and your mail carrier will pick it up. It then goes back to the Post Office where we (I'm a mail carrier) sort it and then send it to a local food bank. This is a national effort, but all food collected goes to a food bank in the region where it was picked up. So you are helping your own local community. Food banks typically run short this time of year, as the Christmas holiday donations are now beginning to dwindle. Plus with the economy so bad, and so many more people out of work, there is a real need. So, I urge everyone here to clean out those cupboards and leave a sack at your mailbox....and Thanks in advance!

Way to go! I am the coordinator for the food drive in our hometown, so I see firsthand how welcome the food is for the local food banks. They really need the food now, as the supplies are running down on their shelves. The schools let out for the summer, and when they do, all the kids who receive free/reduced school lunches and breakfasts will have to find their food at home, further straining the family food budget. It's so important at this time of year--again many thanks for the reminder!

    Default need hygiene supplies too

I had called to ask in prevoius years if I could also give health and beauty supplies. If someone is out of work, they still need toothpaste, deodorant, and tampons. These can be quite expensive oop especially for those who are not coupon savvy!

Please donate a little something if you can. I spoke to the head of our food pantry today, and she said this is what gets them through the next couple of months, when donations are always low.

I think almost all the food pantries are suffering from lower-than-usual donations and higher-than-usual demand. So please help your neighbors who are down on their luck and suffering from the current economy. Your gift could be the difference between whether they eat or not.

    Thanks!

I'd like to make a "nice" donation, so did they say you can leave HandB products?

I know that our local food bank is really hurting. I received an email from a friend saying that the food bank expected a food delivery on the 11th (perhaps the postal food drive?) but would be hurting until then for items like tomato sauce, and hygiene items, esp. toothpaste. I was so happy - because of couponing - to be able to bring in 2 bagfuls of items, one full of Bertollis pasta sauces and one with toothpaste, razors, hair products, deodorant, and a couple cans of cat food. The only things I paid for were the cat food cans!

Wow! I'm really impressed by how many people read my post and responded to it....(since this thread is at the bottom of the page). In answer to "What exactly is a non perishable food item?" That would be anything you could store without refrigeration that won't spoil. In other words, no fresh produce, dairy or meats, as they won't keep in our mail trucks for the day. So any boxed, canned, dried, etc. items would be ok. As far as H and B items, I'll check on that and get back to you. We never collected them before, but maybe this year they will accept them. Also, to the person that made the point that if everyone gives a little, it would make a big difference.. That's so true. I have 996 stops on my route. Just think if every stop donated just one item. My truck would be loaded! Thanks again everyone!
