Saw this story on the AT&T home page. It's somewhat long, but worth the read. A researcher who directed studies on hunger and food insecurity statistics decided to give out cameras to inner-city mothers so they could chronicle their lives. There are some interesting insights here.

Thanks so much for sharing that article, a sobering reminder of why its so important that we share our good finds and freebies with food banks and shelters--this is happening in all of our backyards. How heartbreaking for a mom to watch her children going hungry...

Thanks for sharing this article. It was really sobering and made me feel even more thankful that I'm able to donate much more since I learned to couponshop. I am actually headed to the food bank right now with cereal, blood glucose meters, pet food and toiletries that hardly cost me a thing.

Just as a follow-up - after reading this story, as I said in the previous post, I decided to run over to the food bank/social service agency with a bag of great bargains. Outside, an older lady was just leaving who told me oh, they're just closing, but if you have something to donate, I'm sure they will want to see you.
I noticed she looked at my open box, so I said, hey, do you want some of these things? She ended up with cereal, zone bars, softsoap, shampoo and canned food for her cats. I made sure to emphasize that this hardly cost me anything and that's how I could share. She told me she has $400 income total per month for all of her expenses which kind of blew me away. It was nice to help someone directly. I kept on thinking about the story I had just read. Also, that even though this is generally an affluent area, poverty is right in the neighborhood, often hidden. Thank you to Couponmom for helping us to give.
