Default where to get cat and related cat products in discout price?

My 5 year old want to buy a cat, and we went to Petsmart last Sunday and found one we like.

However it will cost at $120 and then I have to buy litter box, food, etc.

Can anybody tell me a best way to buy a cat and its related stuff?

Thanks

As for a cat, I would check your local animal shelter or humane society, some have a fee, but it generally includes getting them "fixed" and declawed as well, a big money saver in the future.
Also check your newspaper, a lot of people will give their cats away for free or check craigslist.com

When my cats were kittens, I just got their stuff from Walmart, nothing fancy.

As they got older, we added to the collection of toys or graduated them to high quality food that cost more money.

As for what you'll need just to bring them home... some food, something to put their food and water in, litter box - litter, a scoop and preferably liners for the litter pan.

Sometimes they have a starter kit with it all bundled together, but besides the cost of the cat it really shouldn't cost more than $30-40 to get set up.
In time you'll need to take the cat to the vet and get their shots or a license if it's required in your area.

I keep my cats indoors all the time so I don't have them licensed or immunized (by choice). I strongly recommend fixing them when they are old enough because the boys may spray and my girl cat was not fun when she would go into "heat".
Declawing is a personal choice. I wish I would have done it when they were kittens, but thought they should keep them in case we ever got a dog. They are too old to declaw now and they would've been fine with a dog without their front claws. My friends cat bats away they puggle all the time and he normally scares the dog away.

With a 5 year old I'd also recommend a younger cat that will tolerate a child better, plus then he'll grow up with the cat.

Good luck

First of all, this post is in the wrong spot...however I just want to encourage you, and everyone else, NOT to support places like Petsmart who get all of their animals from Puppy/Kitten mills. Support your local animal shelters and adopt an animal that really needs a home.
And please read this before deciding to buy a cat:

Default Cat info

The Petsmart here does not get there cats from the puppy/kitty mills. There is a local no kill organization that uses Petsmart as there adoption site. THere is a fee but that does include the neutering. I just wanted to let everyone know that not all Petsmarts use the mills.

The PetSmart in my area gets the cats from our local humane society to help them find homes. Other stores may go through kitty/puppy mills but PetSmart is where we get all our products for our puppy as it seems to be animal-friendly from everything I've seen.

Default where to find a kitty

If you do not want to pay the adoption fee you can look in your local newspaper. Someone might be giving away or requesting a small fee. Also ask your friends, coworkers, neighbors, ect. Whenever I wanted a cat I always managed to find someone who was giving them away free. These free kittens need a home as much as shelter cats because they are often unwanted and may end up in the streets or a shelter eventually if not adopted.

But just remember that a cat is a large financial responsibility anyway. You will have vet bills to pay for which includes shots and a checkup. Then there are always the chances of a medical emergency, which can be expensive as well.

I find the best deals on cat litter and cat food at pet smart and walmart.

Humane shelters fill up so they either give cats/dogs away or euthanize them at the final hour - check with yours to see if there is an overload. Post Easter is a common time for pets to be unloaded. We brought home a beautiful kitten last summer for free that was at a shelter on the list to be euthanized the next day. The entertainment and attention he gives us is priceless.

Think twice before declawing and maiming a cat. It takes less than 5 minutes once a week to trim their nails. Bugs from outdoors can get inside causing indoor pets to become ill so do interact with your vet when making decisions on your pets health.
