I sent an email to King Soopers using the Customer Comments form on their website. Here are my comments and their response. I'll also attach my original thread posted here.

Store BOGO sale and manufacturer coupon
MY COMMENTS TO KING SOOPERS:
I shopped at your store at W. 38th Ave. and Sheridan on 5/25/2009. I purchased Hillshire Farms smoked sausage which was in the ad for buy one at $4.99 and get one free. I had a coupon for $.75 off the purchase of 2 Hillshire Farms smoked sausage products. At checkout I was told that technically I had only purchased one product since one was free so my coupon would not be honored and in order to use the coupon I would have to buy 4 products. This seems wrong to me. It seems to me that technically I paid half price for each item. I didn't steal the second item, I was merely purchasing it under the price King Soopers had set. Since the store would be reimbursed the $.75 for the coupon regardless of how many items I bought, I don't see why my coupon was dishonored.
If this is the way King Soopers is going to operate in the future, nitpicking
and being petty to make money, I'll be shopping elsewhere.
Dear mreed1587:
Thank you for contacting the King Soopers Co. I understand your concern that they store would not accept the $.75 coupon because the item was buy one, get one free.
I am forwarding your comments to the store manager for review and consideration. I am also sending you a $1 coupon to make up for the coupon the store would not accept.
If you have any further concerns or comments please feel free to contact us at 800.632.6900.
