Question for "SoCalMom...you mentioned "a binder"..is this where you keep all your coupons for your trip to the grocery? if so, how do you have it organized? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I just saw this on Oprah and am very anxious to get started...thank you!!

I didn't see the show but read about the episode on the Oprah website. I was kinda surprised they didn't give the CouponMom link as a resource but I'm sure they are strict about what goes on their website.

that was a great show...I knew about the grocery shopping tips as I've been doing the same things for years..have a binder full of fat coupons/hit the newspaper recycling weekly to pick up extra inserts, etc..

but I had no idea about the houseswapping site, $5 prepaid cell phone thing and such..so still picked up a couple of hints to add to my savvy repertoire..every little thing adds up to lots of knowledge..cut my teeth with the tightwad gazette when I was a young mom/wife..and had a mom that couponed/refunded all through the 70s...so a lot of stuff is inbred..like I about had a heart attack with the family that was so spendthrifty having $650 a month of misc expenses..buying new movies..geez! that would never occur to me..

should of mentioned redbox and their free coupon codes..

it was a great segment with couponmom hopefully, lots more people will come check this out..

Post Electrical Savings

Electricity Savings

From Oprah on 10/8/08, the expose about the lady reducing her electric bill was impressive.
Quote:
Rhondalyn in Baltimore MD lowered her utility bill by unplugging all of her appliances that she is not using. She unplugged her VCR, her DVD players, and her TV. Even if the appliance is turned off it can still use electricity. Her electric bill went from $268 to $91. She even got more vigilant and only paid $60 one month.
At our house this summer it has been an endless exercise in reducing energy consumption.

After having severe storm damage in February we had our roof and windows replaced. This enabled us to get better venting in the attic area along with quality insulated windows.

We had our central air duct work cleaned and resealed. Now the unit does not run as long and the air flow is drastically improved. The dust bunnies just fly across the room right into the intake vent. I highly recommend having this done because a lot of the garbage sucked out of the vents was from the initial construction.

Another thing we changed to is use the computer to charge phones and ipods versus sockets out of the walls. Many phones nowadays have cables that will attach to your computer to download data, this same cable can work as a charger in many cases. Since the computer is on all the time, it makes better sense.

Other tips I have heard of lately is using denim or cotton for insulation versus fiberglass and some sort of meter to plug into the wall to measure consumption of a device plugged into it. Anyone know what this is?

it's funny because there is an article in the November issue of Woman's Day that talks about this very subject. And the device you are looking for is called Kill-A-Watt

The spot was pretty brief. I was bummed because she promoted her site but not couponmom....

Yes! Most of us use a binder, filled with clear baseball or photo sheets to organize our coupons. Clear sheets make it quick to spot the cpn you need
Early on I tried a box-forget it! It got so heavy after only a few weeks-had to move up to the big time
