In order to avoid stocking up TOO much on something, my rule of thumb is to have a certain product "in use" and one on "back up". For example, I have a box of dishwasher tabs that I'm using and another box for when I run out. When I start using the "back up" box that's when I start keeping an eye out for the next sale and coupon which is usually in a week or so. If I didn't do that I'd have tons of shampoo, dishwasher tabs, laundry det., etc. That keeps me from spending when I really don't need to, but having enough stock of whatever it is I need. Also, usually when things like that go on special, at least where I live and shop, the special involves buying multiples anyway. However if a special comes up that I think is pretty extraordinary then I'll make the purchase.
