Smile Great ideas everyone! Here are a couple more...

Write to a former teacher or older person who positively influenced your life. Tell them how much they meant to you. I guarantee it will be the high point of their day.

Be sure to write a sympathy note (not just a card) to those close to you who have lost someone they love. A few kind words at such a time can mean the world to someone.

Food pantries have already been mentioned. I am trying to take something each week. They are always in need of canned meat, as this is a bit more expensive than other items usually donated.

Ask a friend who lives alone out to dinner or over to your house. Check to see if they have somewhere to go at the holidays.

Get to know people who are new in town. It's often difficult to make new friends -- especially if you do not have school-age children.

Put together a care package for AnySoldier.com. You can pick someone from your own state, with your last name, or in any branch of the service. There are females, as well as males, that you can write a letter to or send food and useful (or frivolous!) items too. I don't know how the military can fail to supply such things as razors or enough socks. Some medical units are even short of over-the-counter pain killers. And think how nice it would be to get a few snacks you used to enjoy at home!
