I always add water to my beef when cooking, too. I plop the burger in the pan, add about 1/4 to 1/2 C of water, put a lid on for a few seconds over a medium heat and use my tater masher to break it up. When the burger is done, it's small little bits rather than big chunks (large chunks don't seem to go as far in feeding a family, IME). I learned this when working in restaurants, and just took it home with me. I use a colander to drain the beef and because it's already watered down, I run a stream of hottest water into my disposal and let the beef drain. I'll run straight Dawn into the disposer (while it's running and let it foam up) to clean any grease residue left behind.
